About the region

The Oslo region - vikings, crusaders and explorers

Akershus Fortress, OsloThousands of years ago, the first people came to the Oslo region - and they came to stay. They stod up against the harshness of nature, founded the first settlements and developed their culture. Vikings settled down in Oslo around the year 1000, and built wooden homes and a harbour. Christianization led to a long and bitter struggle between the people. Centuries of agricultural, infrastructural and economic development followed and left their traces all over the region.
Traces of early settlements, religion, culture and early commercial life are fascinating to discover and can be found almost everywhere in the Oslo region. Some of the historical witnesses are famous worldwide and are exhibited in well-known museums in Oslo. The Viking ship house or the Norwegian Folk museum, for instance, show some of the greatest items of Norwegian cultural heritage.
Others, like for example the ruins of the Hamar cathedral, the Maihaugen Folkmuseum of Lillehammer, the Hadeland and Magnor glassworks, the historic wooden town of Røros with the cobber mines or the (Elverum skogsbruksmuseum) may not be that well-known, but are so absolutely worth experiencing.
Famous people came from the Oslo region. Fridtjof Nansen and Roald Amundsen, the Norwegian polar explorers. Edvard Munch, one of the most celebrated painters of the world. The authors and playwrights Henrik Ibsen, Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson and Sigrid Undseth - only to mention some of them.
